Ryvoan Pass, a little after six in the morning. The mist was still deciding what to do with itself, and so was I. Coffee on the tailgate, kettle sulking, the heather doing that thing it does in late summer — turning an entire mountainside purple without asking anyone’s permission.
Then he stepped out of the pines. Antlers first, the way royalty enters a room. He regarded me the way locals regard campervans: tolerant, unhurried, faintly amused. We stood there a full minute, neither of us willing to blink. He was, I noted, considerably better dressed.
This shirt is the closest I have come to evening the score. Garment-dyed and heavyweight, cut with the relaxed generosity of an afternoon with nowhere in particular to be. It has survived launderettes from Aviemore to Ullapool and emerged looking like it enjoyed the trip.
He is still up there, wearing it better.
