The Cows Run the Show

There are places you tick off a list, and there are places that keep tugging at the wheel until you turn back toward them. Stroud is firmly the second kind. This little Cotswolds town has pulled us in time after time, and on this pass we finally answered the pull the way it deserved: a single night up on Minchinhampton Common, parked among the cattle.

Where the cows run the show

The common is one of the strangest and loveliest bits of ground we have ever parked on. From the right angle it could pass for the African savanna, all wide grass and big sky, and then you notice the flags of a golf course threaded through it and cattle wandering wherever they please. This is open range in the middle of England. The cows have the run of the place, and they know it. Come nightfall they bed down on the greens, as if the whole thing had been laid out for their comfort rather than anyone’s short game.

We spent the afternoon watching them drift across the grass, unbothered by golfers, dogs, or a couple of vanlifers with a kettle on.

Fish and chips, good company

In the evening we shared a proper paper-wrapped fish and chips with our friends Mel and Becky, who you might already know from their YouTube channels Big Van Small World and Sacred Traveller. There is a particular ease to eating chips out of the paper with people who understand the rhythm of this life without needing it explained. Good food, better company, and a herd of cows for an audience.

We only stayed one night. That is often how the best commons go: you take what they offer, leave them as you found them, and roll on in the morning. But Stroud has a way of writing itself back onto our map. We will be back before long. We always are.
