I did it.
Today, after Diane’s prodding, I bought a DJI Phantom 3 Professional quadcopter.
Before we left Arizona, I got into flying RC planes with my 83 year old neighbor, Kenny. He introduced me to the amazing world he had been toying around with since the 1950’s. Looking at the computerized telemetry and flight controls packaged with the Phantom, I am sure that Kenny would scoff. He liked the greasy mess that came along with ‘gassers’ as they called them. In fact, I bought a couple of electric powered RC planes and he rarely flew them, claiming “If I can’t hear it, it isn’t flying!”
There is so much I have to learn about aerial photography. The nice part is that I live in a place where people travel to in order to make beautiful images. For me, they are right out the door.
It will be an experience, of that I am sure.
I just hope I don’t crash it on the first flight… or the second…. or third.
The hardest part of all is dealing with the delay in gratification. I am not one of those millennials who demands instant satisfaction, but mine will be delayed until August 20th. I have had a few shipping mishaps in the recent past (an SD card I ordered sat in the Isla post office for one full month before the guy behind the counter ‘found it’), so I decided to ship it to Diane’s cousin in Massachusetts. She is headed up there late in August and will bring the quadcopter (they are not drones) back with her.
All I can say is ‘argh’… Now, on to watch yet ANOTHER video about flying it…
…and they say Christmas comes slowly!
