Lessons Learned

The first full week of flying the quadcopter around Isla Mujeres has been very enlightening.  At the same time I am trying to teach myself the technical basics of flying, I am also learning to deal with the inevitable interactions that happen with a new and interesting technology.

I am fairly amazed at how responsive people from all walks of life are to the presence of the quadcopter.  Rather than the expected distain, people have universally been intrigued and inquisitive.  In just one week, I have shared the experience with bank presidents and garbage men…and each had the same delight!  So far, and I am sure I will encounter it some day soon, no one has been the least hesitant to interact with the quadcopter or express the slightest concern!  What a refreshing change from what I was expecting!

The one most hesitant is certainly me!  As I fly my new baby across the gleaming blue Caribbean or through the palm trees, I have a little rise inn blood pressure!  This is not lessened by the one unexpected, but persistent, question, “How much did it cost?”  Almost to a person, they have asked that!  Odd.  Then again, the technology is so new.. and no one really knows much about it… so they think they would love to get their hands on one to try it out.

I can assure you one thing: It is worth it!

WooHoo! Off into the wild blue yonder!

I’ve given two answers… to a couple of people, I told the actual price and they all agreed that it was not nearly what they thought. Most of them estimated that it was about double what it actually cost (around $1,500 after all is said and done).

To others, I just smiled and said, “My wife bought it for my birthday and she won’t tell me how much she spent!” That has garnered a smile every time! One guy even said, “Oh, someday I wish I could find a good wife like you have!”

It is pretty odd. I did not expect people to ask that as frequently as they do. Every single time I have had it out in public – and a couple of times flying at my house – I have been asked that!
